Help Us Put a Pavilion Over the Coach!
The historic Pullman Passenger Coach (#1246) was built in 1907 for the Boston & Maine Railroad. This car served passengers until 1950 when it was converted and used as a mobile track maintenance car. After, the car had traveled around New England briefly as a passenger car for Steamtown in Vermont, but later obtained by David Woodbury of New Boston in the early 1990's after Steamtown moved south to Pennsylvania. Mr. Woodbury undertook a massive restoration project before donating the car to the Contoocook Riverway Association in 2007.
For several years, the car sat untouched, not known by the association that tremendous roof damage and internal decay was occurring. In the fall of 2018, a fundraising campaign was completed to purchase a custom tarp-style cover for the car at an expense of over $2,000. The cover was designed to form around the car and has a total life expectancy of about ten years and is currently installed during the winter months.
Today, visibility into the cars decay can easily be seen. In order to properly repair and restore the car, a permanent roof structure will need to be built to protect the car from the elements during restoration and to preserve the completed car for many years to come.
This project is estimated to cost about $25,000 and we cannot complete this effort without your help. Contributors can visit the fundraising campaign site by clicking here. Additional funding methods can be found on our Give page.
